Is TV Too Gory?
The Walking Dead If you absolutely, positively need to visit whether a spook has devoured military services weapons girl, there's only one step to complete: Shoot it inside the mind and disembowel what remains in the flesh-eater's rotting corpse.Yuck? Possibly, but it's that kind of periodic carnage that has fans rabid for AMC's The Walking Dead. The zombie series is constantly unearth large ratings since it brings in the modern of horror and thriller series - as well as the connected gore - on tv. The recognition began with Showtime's Dexter as well as the titular killer's plastic-wrapped human-carving station, additionally to HBO's True Blood stream which is flesh-ripping, neck-biting vamps. Then came The Walking Dead, plus much more recently, FX's American Horror Story and NBC's Grimm, because both versions have scared up substantial audiences.TV's past thrillers, such as the Twilight Zone, relied much more about mental scares than gore. Horror can be a polarizing genre, which explains why the systems mostly avoided it. But occasions have changed, content standards have loose, and cable has the ability to target a market crowd that likes somewhat gristle inside their TV diet. The horror genre makes a bit of the comeback lately, as audiences elevated acquainted with more graphic thrills with the recognition of movies like Saw, Paranormal Activity as well as the Human Centipede (many of which are actually named "torture porn" because of their graphic character). Also, dark procedurals like CSI and Criminal Minds handled to obtain safe to demonstrate brutalized corpses in prime time, paving the means by which for any couple of from the nasty images on TV's horror explosion."CSI needed it to another level if this involves exploring gore," states AMC programming senior v . p . Joel Stillerman. "Our intent was not ever to pay attention to the gore," he adds in the Walking Dead. "Perform it with techniques that's organic for the story. People who love that stuff can geek out, so when you don't, you'll be able to cover how well you see. Everyone knows where the limits are which we know very well what flies and exactly what does not. Once we push it, we manage a disclaimer."But TV producers appear at first sight still thinking about frightening audiences than grossing them out. In contrast for the realism on TV's forensics and autopsy shows, the cell phone industry's in the Walking Dead and American Horror Story have been in least rooted in make-believe.Fans in the Walking Dead know you may anticipate the periodic blood stream and guts - like the time a spook was sliced in 2 since it was attracted from the correctly - that assist balance quiet, more emotional moments in the story that essentially is about a family group trying to outlive an apocalypse. "You will discover certain conventions inside the horror genre, then one is always that dispatching zombies, or humans being attacked by zombies, will probably be fairly graphic," states executive producer Gale Anne Hurd. "In the event you aren't developing a cheesy show, which we're not, it is something we will probably deliver. Ultimately, zombies aren't any more alive, and inside your 'kill' them is to apply a mind shot."Audiences don't appear to become turned off with the splatter. The Walking Dead's season premiere attracted the most effective adult 18-49 ratings ever for just about any cable drama. At Foreign exchange, American Horror Story grows its audience and was recently restored for Season 2. Foreign exchange programming executive v . p . Nick Grad states American Horror Story gets in the large female audience that's thinking about the show's figures which is underlying theme - of a marriage at risk - than its horror imagery (having a blood stream-thirsty demon baby). "We wouldn't like to be gratuitous just regarding being gratuitous," according to him. "If you are planning to behave pretty extreme, there should be considered grounds you do the job.InchDespite the truth that ABC's approaching The River will contain gory elements, the show's producers say a variety of it will probably be blurred out. "We're not always fans of gore," states executive producer Michael Eco-friendly. "There's a big difference between horror and thriller, and that we tend to be more inside the thriller camping."Meaning audiences won't get a full look in a nasty dead body the River's art department ready for just one episode - no less than not. Just just just in case audiences require more gore utilizing their goose bumps, fellow professional producer Zack Estrin states they're mulling an uncensored DVD. Ultimately, in Hollywood everyone's searching for your different kind of gross - profits.Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

Ratings Rat Race: AMAs Steady, SNF Wins
How about that nude bodysuit on 42-year-old Jennifer Lopez at the American Music Awards last night? Not much else from last night to talk about, as the AMAs on ABC (4.3/10 in adults 18-49, 12 million) were flat with last year’s show in 18-49 (up 3% in total viewers), and the other programs trended down against the music awards, which outperformed ABC’s nightly 18-49 average from last week by 48%. As usual, the biggest ratings swings were at Fox and CBS, which alternate in following the late NFL game. Last night, it was CBS’ turn to have the late game, which pushed the start of the network’s primetime to 7:25 PM. 60 Minutes (approx. 3.0/8) was up 43% from last week when it didn’t have a football lead-in. The Amazing Race (2.7/6) was even with last week, while The Good Wife (1.9/4) and CSI: Miami (1.7/4) felt the effect of the AMAs, down 5% and 19%, respectively. At Fox, The Simpsons (2.7/7) was down 21% without a football lead-in. Its lead-in this week was the time period premiere of The Cleveland Show (1.8/5), which was down 25% from its last original 4 weeks ago behind The Simpsons to a series low. The show that replaced it at 8:30 PM, rookie Allen Gregory, continues to shed a tenth of a rating point every week, slipping to a 1.9/4. Family Guy (3.1/7) and American Dad (2.4/5) were flat. NBC once again won Sunday with Sunday Night Football. Last nights game, in which the Eagles defeated the Giants 17-10, posted a 14.0 overnight rating/22 share, down 3% from last week and 12% from last years Week 11 game between the Eagles hosting the Giants who at the time were tied for first place in the NFC East.
Dancing with the Stars Finale: Who Will Win?
Rob Kardashian, Ricki Lake and J.R. Martinez Is Dancing with the Stars' Mirrorball trophy still J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff's to lose? The frontrunner suffered an ankle injury last week, meaning Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke, and Ricki Lake and Derek Hough are still very much in the running - not that they were ever completely out of it. Kardashian's improbable journey may be the story of the season, and Lake has Hough, the show's first three-time champ, in her corner. The trio will face off Monday and Tuesday with four dances: an unlearned dance, their favorite dance, the Instant samba and, of course, the freestyle.Who's got the edge? Let's size them up!Dancing's Cheryl Burke: Rob Kardashian is not distracted by Kim's divorceROB KARDASHIANFor: The Kardashian fan base and improvement arc. Kardashian might be the weakest of the finalists - he's the only one who hasn't score a perfect 30 yet - but he embodies what the show is supposed to be about: someone with absolutely no performing experience and isn't a natural dancer who buckles down and learns to dance slowly but surely. He's peaking at the right time, winning the cha-cha relay last week, and perhaps best news of all: Sister Kim's divorce doesn't seem to have affected him or viewers' fondness for him.Needs to work on: Confidence. Kardashian is seemingly an aberration in his family being so shy and uncomfortable in front of the camera. He's shown glimpses of self-assurance, but he has to kick it into gear if he wants to take down Lake and Martinez. "He's definitely getting better and better each week," Burke tells TVGuide.com. "He's working really hard and getting into character better, and my job is to help build up that confidence and reassure him." Why he might win: Who doesn't love an underdog? The unlikeliest finalist of the trio, Kardashian, like most people, never pictured himself in the final. "The fact that we're in the position that we're in? I shocked myself," he says. Many pre-season predictions had him going out early, like Kim did, but he's proved them wrong with his ability and commitment, so who's to say he can't top it off with a victory? Keep an eye out for: More booty-shaking. Kardashian's big bum has been both an asset and his own worst enemy, but he used his gluteus maximus to the, uh, max in the samba last week - and look at that! There's going to be an Instant samba in the finals. "He's learned to work with his butt, so we're going to use that to our advantage," Burke says.Dancing's Derek Hough: I don't feel pressure to winRICKI LAKEFor: Consistency. Martinez has two scores of 30s to Lake's one, but when you crunch the numbers, she holds the edge in score average and most weeks on top of the leader board with six. Lake is a very proficient dancer and rarely has had any bad weeks. Excluding her first-week score of 20, her second-lowest score was a 24, which is very good by most competitors' standards. "We've definitely had more ups than downs this season, which is always a plus, so we just have to keep that going," Hough says.Needs to work on: Performance factor. While she gives fans a great bang for their buck, Lake is not as flashy or expressive as Martinez is on the floor. At times, Lake, who's made it clear she's hard on herself, appears more in her head, thinking about the steps, than in the moment. Why she might win: Lake has reclaimed the momentum after relinquishing it midseason to Martinez. After Martinez hurt his ankle last week, Lake emphatically stamped herself as the current one to beat with her first 30 and the highest score of the evening. Plus, she has Hough as her partner, and he obviously knows what it takes to win. Did we mention that he's also been perfect in finals? Lake can make that record 4-0, but don't remind him of that. "I try not to think about it," he says.Keep an eye out for: Another trademark Hough, crowd-pleasing freestyle. Freestyles are Hough's bread and butter, and he says if theirs - an idea he's been kicking around for a bit - goes according to plan, it could be "really cool." And we all know that freestyles are the make-it-or-break-it dance.Read Maks' Dancing blogJ.R. MARTINEZFor: Musicality, personality and a back story for the ages. The All My Children star and vet - who suffered burns after driving over a landmine in Iraq in 2003 - can do it all: put on a showstopper that brings the crowd to its feet and put on a poignant number that reduces the audience to tears. "J.R. is just amazing," Kym Johnson says. "He just draws you in when he dances. I don't think anybody can not enjoy watching him dance."Needs to work on: Not much. But he twisted his ankle in rehearsals and on the floor last week, so here's to a speedy recovery! Why he might win: He's got the complete package: technique, talent, charm and sizzling chemistry with Smirnoff. Cynics might suggest his story will garner sympathy votes, but Martinez has proven week in and week out that he has the goods, and has undoubtedly won over more fans with his performance and fun-loving personality. "I think anybody would be a fool not to root for J.R. given who he represents and how great he is," Maksim Chmerkovskiy writes in his TVGuide.com blog. "Everything about him screams Dancing winner."Keep an eye out for: Not to be a downer, but any effects from his ankle injury. It would be a shame if he can't put his best foot forward (no pun intended) in the finals. "I hope his ankle's all right," Hough says. "He's overcome so much as it is. He's a fighter and a competitor, so I'm sure he will tough this out." Who do you think will win? Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke Ricki Lake and Derek Hough J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff vote view results

Will R&B Artist Who Offered $1 Million Reward on YouTube Have to Pay Up? (Analysis)
GettyRyan Leslie Before any celebrity takes to Twitter and announces a big-ticket reward for solving the mystery of lost keys or for providing information leading to the arrest of a certain college football coach, they might wish to consider two recent lawsuits.our editor recommendsRonni Chasen Remembered: One Year LaterRonni Chasen Murder Case Tipster Sues Over Reward In one dispute, a manseeks to collect on a $1 million reward offered on YouTubeby musicianRyan Lesliefor finding his missing laptop. In another dispute, an anonymous person looks to collect on a $125,000 reward offered byPalm Springs Film Festival headHarold MatznerandpublicistMichael Levineforinformation leading to the identification of fellow publicistRonni Chasen's killer. The two recent cases show that it's legally dangerous to hang reward offers out there if you don't intend to pay. The two lawsuits have some differences but one big similarity. In the case against Leslie, the object in question was a laptop that had gone missing in Germany that was very important to the R&B/hip-hop star. According to his YouTube posting, Leslie said: "Last night something very personal, something very special was taken. I am offering a reward of $20,000...that reward is really not even close to the value of everything that we lost....so if you have any information, if you've seen anything, if you hear anything, get at me." Leslie established an e-mail account to receive information and then upped the reward from $20,000 to $1 million. He even posted on his Twitter account the following: "I'm absolutely continuing my Euro tour plus raised the reward for my intellectual property to $1mm. Click to watch: http://on.fb.me/bCBnrM" A man returned the laptop, and then tried to contact Leslie by e-mail, but never heard back. Meanwhile, according to thecomplaintfiled in the lawsuit against Matzner and Levine, in an effort to assist the police in investigating the murder of their friend Chasen, Matzner "offered a reward of $100,000 for information" about Chasen and "separately offered to start a reward fund that was to contain a minimum of $25,000 within a week." An individual heard news reports about the rewards and allegedly at great personal risk called in a tip toAmerica's Most Wanted identifying the killer's name. The suspect committed suicide and the police launched an investigation. Afterwards, Matzner told the media that he was "prepared to pay the reward as soon as the Beverly Hills Police Department tells us that it is the correct thing to do." The complaint says that the police confirmed the tip as resulting in the solving of the case, but the tipster never got the money. Two different cases, but in each, the plaintiffs are arguing breach of contract. We imagine that when most law students take their contracts class, it's pretty boring. That is, until the subject turns to the enforceability of unilateral contracts. For understandable reasons, disputes here tend to set off the imagination. Witness the analysis offered byNadia-Elysse Harris, who is studying law and journalism at NY Law School. Shewriteson the Leslie case that the standard for figuring out whether there's an enforceable contract in these situations is whether a reasonable person would have assumed the offer for reward to be valid. She thinks the plaintiff has a great shot at winning if the case doesn't settle. "Our laptop finder will likely walk away $1 million richer," she writes. Perhaps, but there's another case that comes to mind. In 2006, another law student by the name ofDustin Kolodziejwas watching NBC'sDatelineand heard a lawyer,James Mason, defending one of his clientsaccused of three murders. Mason told the TV audienceit was impossible for his client to have committed the crimes since it would have required his client to fly from Orlando to Atlanta, exit one of the busiest airports in the world, and arrive at a hotel five miles away in less than a half hour. "I challenge anybody to show me, I'll pay them a million dollars if they can do it," said Mason on the show. Kolodziej retraced the alleged murderer's supposed route and made a video recording of his travel in less than 28 minutes. He couldn't get Mason to pay up, and five years later, he's still embroiled in pre-trial litigation in efforts to collect the claimed $1 million. Arguing for the validity of a contract works in the classroom, but a unilateral offers + surprising acceptance really amounts to an implicit agreement by all parties to experience a massive legal headache. Notes from the Jason Reitman-Directed Live Script Read of The Apartment
Part of the wave of initiatives in Elvis Mitchell’s rebooted Film Independent at LACMA programming is a series of live script reads directed by Jason Reitman (Up in the Air, Juno), who kicked things off last month with a star-studded rendition of The Breakfast Club. Last night’s second script read of the 1960 multiple Oscar-winner The Apartment, with Natalie Portman and Steve Carell in the Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon roles, respectively, demonstrated how the marriage of cherished movie memories, live theater, and fresh talent is such an inspired idea to begin with. Following the success of Reitman’s Breakfast Club live read, anticipation was high for The Apartment, with Reitman doling out casting announcements via Twitter leading up to Thursday’s event. His selections were varied but pretty great: Portman, post-baby, gave elevator operator Fran Kubelik a tough-edged fragility of her own, while Carell, initially rushing through his lines, eventually relaxed into the nave bluster of clueless accountant C.C. Baxter at his own signature Carell pitch. J.K. Simmons, initially set to play Baxter’s sauve philandering boss Mr. Sheldrake, couldn’t make it as planned, sending a wave of disappointment through the crowd. “Believe you me, he’s been in everything I’ve ever made,” Reitman admitted. “So this is a little weird for me.” Luckily, he found the perfect last-minute replacement. “There’s a young actor, you may not know his name, you may know it soon, and I’m thrilled that he’s going to be joining us tonight,” Reitman announced, teasing the crowd. “In the role of Sheldrake, originated by Fred McMurray… Pierce Brosnan!” James Bond as Mr. Sheldrake. So fitting! Reitman’s supporting cast helped Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond’s script leap off the page, with Jake Johnson, Mindy Kaling, Colette Wolf, Nick Kroll, and Ken Jeong providing multiple characterizations. Comedian Kroll (of The League fame) and Jeong in particular, turning up the comic midcentury swagger, knew to pause to let their punchlines breathe; Jeong, who gamely shrieked through a few awful Asian accented lines as the waitstaff at the Rickshaw restaurant — shaking his head the whole time — clearly had more fun than anyone in the entire theater just watching the proceedings unfold. From the aisles there was the added dimension of seeing locations from the film projected above the stage, with key characters digitally removed by Reitman & Co.; you could, or inadvertently did, transpose your own memories of watching the 1960 film with the live dialogue onstage. Add to that Reitman’s own stage direction, read from the script with vivid scene and character details otherwise simply visualized in cinematic form, and the whole of the story and its characters came alive in a wholly new way. For a movie event sans actual movie screening, it was an incredibly extra-cinematic experience to have. That’s the way magic was made, movie-wise. (Next month’s already sold-out live read, teased thusly at the end of last night’s event: “Inconceivable!” Start hunting for tickets now.)
